Cage de Vampires

Thomas began yammering about vampires on the walk.

“The vampire is quite possibly the most intelligent of the monsters. They have given up their human form for the form of a humanoid bat. They could make themselves seem normal. They can only do this at night. They must rest underground, or in their graves.”

“How do we kill such creatures,” asked William.

“Most of the monsters are killed by some sort of symbolic act. They are creatures of blood. The heart is important to them. Destroy it, and they will be destroyed.”

“If we come upon them,” said Eldura, “at night, they will be at their most powerful. That is why we are going to wait until a full day before we delve into their lair. Remember their power of delusion is extremely good. They can make themselves look as attractive as they need. The idea is to get you into their place where they will suck your blood.”

“I like the way you say ‘suck your blood,’” said William

“Behave yourself.” The look on Eldura’s face encouraged to not behave.

“That is hard to do around you, Eldura.”

Eldura pulled out her fan. She extended and put it over her face. It was such a Victorian thing to do.

“Thomas how much power should I bring?”

“We will know more once we’ve been through the performance at cage de vampires. I should not think that you would need anything other than your Colt pistol.”

William carried his Colt revolver in his holster at his right hip. His black hat now had a silver hat band. It was one more gift from Thomas to the man that he was calling a Knight Errant.

Before they knew it, they were at the theater. At one time this was a very popular theater. It was named the Ford theater. It ran a variety of plays. Now in the dilapidated condition, it was cover for a warren of vampires. William did not need Thomas or Eldura to tell him of the taint over the theater. William’s own sight showed him the darkness within.

“I hope that you can get The horses back just as quickly,” said Thomas.

“Don’t be such a doubting Thomas,” said William.

Eldura and Thomas stopped for a moment. They went through the words that he said in their heads, and it still came out as a joke. That was something they did not see very much out of William. It was a breeze of fresh air. They rather liked this new William. Eldura loved her man, but he could be a stuffed shirt Knight. She wished that he would be more like Galahad, Upright, and a jokester.

“I almost like the dour and taciturn William. Not this joke-ridden warrior.” Thomas who preached adapting to the situation. William wished he had not.

“That’s what you get for bringing in levity. Now William has an ear for it,” said Eldura. “Let’s keep our eyes open. They can move quickly and silently.”

They climbed the steps of the old theater. A desiccated man was standing at the door. Eldura offered the three tickets.
